Astronomy, hiking, LEGO modeling, model trains and playing the piano

Gary Garber teaches physics and engineering and coaches the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1512 at St. Paul’s School.

He grew up in the Hartford, Connecticut, area and attended the Loomis Chaffee School before attending Haverford College. At Haverford he majored in astronomy and physics, played cricket, and was director of the annual comedy show, editor of the humor magazine and the college mascot.

Garber entered the teaching profession early by presenting children’s planetarium shows on the weekends. After teaching at the Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, he earned his master’s in physics at Boston University. He then spent two decades at the Boston University Academy teaching physics, advising student research in university labs and coaching the Science Team and FRC Team 246.

As an educational consultant of many years, Garber has authored dozens of curricula in math, science, technology, robotics and computer science. He also has facilitated hundreds of professional development workshops and coached hundreds of teachers in best practices for companies such as Better Lesson, Discovery Education and DEILAB. Garber’s educational research focuses on using technology tools in the classroom to aid in collaboration and documentation.
