Traveling and learning new languages

Nancy Magnus grew up in northern Vermont and attended St. Johnsbury Academy before earning her B.S. in studio art from Skidmore College, where she studied painting and graphic design with additional studies in art history and business. She later earned her MFA in drawing and painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Ms. Magnus began her teaching career at Blair Academy in New Jersey, where she taught drawing and photography, coached soccer and lived in the dorms. She later joined the arts faculty at The Madeira School in Virginia, teaching photography while also serving as a dorm head and track and field coach.

For the past 13 years, Ms. Magnus has lived and worked internationally in South Africa, Senegal, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. While overseas, she taught art in international schools and worked in human resources at U.S. embassies, supporting American and local staff while continuing to make and exhibit her own work.

An artist at heart, Ms. Magnus brings her camera wherever she goes — capturing light, color and culture in the places she calls home. She loves exploring creative processes with students, especially alternative photography, mixed media and collaborative projects.

She loves traveling and exploring new places home and abroad and also loves learning new languages. Most recently, she has studied French and Spanish in order to better connect with artists and communities where she’s lived abroad, often bringing those global perspectives into the classroom.
