Susannah Tracy Phillips earned her B.A. in biology with a minor in biochemistry from Colorado College, where she was also a member of the varsity women’s volleyball team. Initially on a path toward a career in medicine, she spent two years after college conducting clinical research in the Surgical Oncology Department at Massachusetts General Hospital. During that time, she was part of a team whose work on spatially organized multicellular immune hubs in human colorectal cancer was published in Cell.

She enrolled in the M.D. program at Tufts University School of Medicine but took a leave of absence after her first year to explore other avenues. While working as a substitute teacher in the Weston Public Schools in Massachusetts, she discovered a deep passion for education and decided not to return to medical school. She went on to teach middle and high school mathematics in Weston for three years and earned her M.Ed. in STEM Education from Lesley University.

Phillips is thrilled to join the St. Paul’s School community — a place that holds special significance for her, as her grandfather, George Tracy, taught Latin, Greek and Shakespeare at the School for four decades.

Phillips lives on campus and serves as an assistant coach for the volleyball and softball teams.
