The St. Paul's School diploma is awarded to the student who

(a) enrolls in a minimum of 5 credits per term
(b) enrolls in a combined total of at least 30
credits during the Fifth Form and Sixth Form years
(c) has no more than one unsatisfactory final grade for any course
(d) satisfies the requirements listed

Credit requirements

  1. Arts:

    For students who matriculate in the Third Form: 4 Arts credits – one-year sequence in one discipline within the Arts in their first year at the School and completed prior to their Sixth Form year; and elected 1 credit in any discipline within the Arts.

    For students who matriculate in the Form Form: 4 Arts credits – one-year sequence in one discipline within the Arts in their first year at the School and completed prior to their Sixth Form year, and elected 1 credit in any discipline within the Arts.

    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form: 3 Arts credits – one-year sequence in one discipline within the Arts in their first year at the School and completed prior to their Sixth Form year.


    All students matriculating in the Third or Fourth Form year must complete a year and one term in the Arts to graduate; students matriculating in the Fifth Form must complete one year of study in the Arts to fulfill their graduation requirements. The initial year of study in the Arts must be three consecutive terms, i.e., a year-long course of study, in any one of the four Arts programs--Dance, Theatre, Fine Arts, or Music. It is strongly recommended that the first year of study in the Arts be completed in a student's first year at the School.

    Courses that fulfill this initial year graduation requirement in the Arts--and serve as prerequisites to almost all other courses in their respective programs--include:

    In Fine Arts--Fine Arts Foundations
    In Theatre--Foundations in Theatre
    In Dance--Introduction to Dance
    In Music--Introduction to Applied Music or Applied Music

    All students are strongly encouraged to continue to study in the arts throughout their St. Paul's School career.

  2. Humanities:
    For students who matriculate in the Third Form:
    19 credits
    Sequence of Humanities III (6 credits), Humanities IV (6 credits), Humanities V (6 credits)
    Then one elected course in religious studies (1 credit).


    For students who matriculate in the Fourth Form:
    13 credits
    Sequence of Humanities IV (6 credits), Humanities V (6 credits)
    Then one elected course in religious studies (1 credit).


    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form:
    7 credits
    Humanities V (6 credits)
    Then one elected course in religious studies (1 credit). 

  3. Languages:
    For students who matriculate in the Third Form:
    9 credits
    Three-year sequence in the same language

    For students who matriculate in the Fourth Form:
    6 credits
    Two-year sequence in the same language

    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form:
    3 credits

  4. Mathematics:
    For students who matriculate in the Third Form:
    9 credits or through Precalculus
    Minimum of 3 credits earned in residence at St. Paul's School

    For students who matriculate in the Fourth Form:
    6 credits or through Precalculus
    Minimum of 3 credits earned in residence at St. Paul's School

    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form:
    3 credits earned in residence at St. Paul's School

  5. Science:
    For students who matriculate in the Third Form:
    9 credits
    Recommended series of Physics First (3 credits), Chemistry (3 credits), Biology (3 credits)

    For students who matriculate in the Fourth Form:
    6 credits
    Recommended 6 credits in two of the following: Physics (3 credits), Chemistry (3 credits), Biology (3 credits)

    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form:
    3 credits
Non-credit requirements

  1. Athletics:
    For students who matriculate in the Third Form:
    8 terms
    Third Form year (3 terms), Fourth Form year (3 terms), then 2 additional terms, 1 of which must be in the Fifth Form year

    For students who matriculate in the Fourth Form:
    5 terms
    Fourth Form year (3 terms), then 2 additional terms, 1 of which must be in the Fifth Form year

    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form:
    2 terms
    Fifth Form year (at least 1 term); additional 1 term in the Fifth Form year or the Sixth Form year

    Non-Credit Requirements: Community Outreach
  2. For students who matriculate in the Third Form:
    40 hours, 10 hours required each year in residence

    For students who matriculate in the Fourth Form:
    30 hours, 10 hours required each year in residence

    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form:
    20 hours, 10 hours required each year in residence

  3. Residential Life:
    For students who matriculate in the Third Form:
    12 terms

    For students who matriculate in the Fourth Form:
    9 terms

    For students who matriculate in the Fifth Form:
    6 terms
    Participation in Residential Life Program

Courses are assigned 1 credit per term, with the exception that Humanities III, Humanities IV, and Humanities V are each assigned 2 credits per term.
