Comments: BC High got out quickly off the start and established themselves as the leader, by the first quarter they had built a ½ length lead. SPS responded and slowed the Boston College HS movement, with BC High leading by ¾ of a length at the halfway point. In the third quarter BC High extended their lead to 1 length, and Boston College HS sprinted well to extend their lead to 1¾ lengths in the final quarter of the race.
1st Boys’ Eight SPS 3:50.2 BC HS 4:06.4
Comments: SPS and BC High were fairly even early, though BC High attacked the start more aggressively than SPS. Rowing a steady rhythm, St. Paul’s matched the base speed of BC High crew and began to press ahead. At the quarter, SPS led by ½ length, at halfway, SPS led by 1 length, and SPS pulled steadily away in the second half of the race, leading by two lengths at the three quarter mark and by four lengths at the finish. Overall: it was a good day of racing in very good conditions, especially for relatively inexperienced crews. The crews responded to both the racing opportunity and the competition well, and they showed good speed, especially at base rate.

In the third 500m, St. Paul’s pressed through Salisbury (by inches) to claim second place behind Deerfield, with Brunswick, Andover, and Kent close behind. SPS 1st: 4:59.5 | SPS 2nd: 5:15.1 | SPS 3rd: 4:55.8 | SPS 4th: 5:51.8 |
Bedford: 5:23.6 | Bedford: 5:30.7 | Bedford: 5:08.9 | SPS 5th: 6:09.8 |
Bedford: 6:22.6 |
1st eights: Both crews started cleanly, with SPS taking an early lead by the end of the first 250. After settling into their solid, aggressive rhythm, they continued to open up water through the first 500. Through the middle 500, SPS continued to widen the gap, rowing with poise and confidence. Bedford stayed aggressive and continued pushing all the way down the course, but SPS finished strongly with their fastest time of the season so far.
2nd eights: Both crews started started cleanly on the line, with Bedford taking a slight advantage through the first 100 meters. SPS pulled even by 250 meters in, and once they established their base rhythm, started taking seats on Bedford. Bedford fought hard to maintain contact through the 500 meter mark, but SPS found their swing and began opening the gap through the middle 500. SPS finished with a strong push to the line, finishing 15 seconds up on Bedford.
3rd eights: The boats started on the line, but about 10 strokes in, the boats collided and clashed oars. The race was stopped, the crews pulled apart, and the race was restarted where the collision occurred, about 100 meters into the race course. Because of the shortened course, times from this race should not be compared to the other races. After the second start, SPS and Bedford were even for about 200 meters before SPS began to take a slight advantage. Even with that advantage, it took another 500 meters, a little over halfway through the race, before SPS truly found their rhythm. Once there, SPS opened up the gap and finished with a very strong final 500 meters to finish 13 seconds up on Bedford.
4th and 5th eights: A clean start by all crews as they settled into the first 250 meters of the race with SPS 4th slightly up on Bedford, who was slightly up on SPS 5th.As the boats approached the 500 meter mark, SPS 4th had opened up a length of open water lead over SPS 5th, who had pulled a few seats up on Bedford. Through the middle 500 meters, SPS 4th continued to open their lead on SPS 5th, who pulled to an open water advantage over Bedford. Through the final 500 meters, both SPS crews continued to widen the gap as they raced hard to the line.
We are grateful to Bedford for making the trip to Concord and for the racing today. It was our first time racing Bedford and it is a race we hope to continue in the future. It’s great to see the continued growth of New Hampshire crews in the NEIRA league.

SPS vs Hanover High, Win 1-0
SPS vs Duxbury High, Win 1-0
Race Order: G4-G3-G2-G1-G5/6 All crews started on the line with the exception of the G2 crews which started 6 seats over the line and the G5/6 crews which clashed oars at the start and then were realigned and restarted 250m beyond the line. Thanks to Hanover and Duxbury for making the trip to Concord for some solid racing in challenging conditions.

Hanover made a strong move to push back rowing two beats above SPS, but SPS continued to drive forward in tough conditions. Hanover and Duxbury continued to battle with each other through the first 500 with Hanover taking a few seats on the other crew. As the boats moved through the middle 500, SPS continued to push forward and opened up the gap on Hanover which continued to push back against Duxbury. As the boats came into the last 500, SPS continued to drive toward the line with Duxbury making a strong push on Hanover as those crews raced for second. SPS crossed first with a solid race with Hanover a few seats up on Duxbury.
2nd eights: Both crews started cleanly six seats over the line with SPS pushing ahead of both crews from the start as Hanover pushed ahead of Duxbury. SPS established rhythm and swing quickly and continued to open up a solid lead on the other two crews. As the boats moved into the second part of the race and a more protected area, the SPS crew opened up their lead, driving toward the line 2-3 beats under the rating for the other crews. SPS crossed the line strong with Hanover ahead of Duxbury.
3rd eights: The boats started 2-3 seats over the line, with SPS getting off the line with a strong start to push ahead of the other two crews. Establishing a strong rhythm, SPS continued to row aggressively down the course, continuing to open their lead as Hanover extended their lead on Hanover which was up on Duxbury. With strong swing, SPS moved into the second 500 and held a solid lead. As the boats entered the third 500, Hanover opened their lead on Duxbury while SPS continued to drive aggressively with solid swing towards the finish line where they crossed ahead of the other crews having rowed a solid race.
4th eights: The boats started on the line with a clean start. The crews were even in the starting stroked of the race, but as they shifted into their base rhythm, SPS pushed ahead and continued to establish strong swing and rhythm down the course. SPS continued to push ahead on their lead which Duxbury moved ahead of Andover in the second 500. As the crews came to the line SPS extended their lead to cross the line ahead of the other two crews.
5th eights: The boats started on the line, but off the start the Hanover and SPS boats collided. The race was stopped and restarted 250 meters into the race. Because of the shortened course, times from this race should not be compared to the other races. A clean start as the crews settled into the first 250 of the race with SPS slightly up on Duxbury 5 which had moved ahead of Hanover and Duxbury 6. As the boats approached the 500 meter mark, SPS opened up a length of open water lead over Duxbury which had opened up distance on Hanover and Duxbury 6. As the boats came into the last strokes of the race, SPS held a commanding lead with Duxbury opening their lead on Hanover and Duxbury 6.

1st eights: All crews started cleanly a half length over the line, with SPS taking an early lead ahead of both Deerfield which moved up a few seats on Exeter. SPS continued to lead through the first 500. Deerfield was overstroking the SPS boat and began to push through in the second 500 while SPS continued to widen the distance with Exeter. With 1000 meters down, the SPS crew continued to drive aggressively down the course taking some seats back on Deerfield and pushing ahead on Exeter which was also overstroking the SPS crew. Coming into the last 250, the Deerfield crew pushed ahead with SPS driving into the sprint and Exeter pushing strong. Deerfield crossed the line ahead 5 seconds ahead of SPS which had opened almost 8 seconds on Exeter. Very grateful to these fast crews that helped SPS record its fastest 1500 on our home course this year.
2nd eights: Both crews started cleanly a half length over the line, with Deerfield taking a slight advantage through the first 100 meters as Exeter moved a few seats up on SPS. The SPS crew raced very aggressively and did not let Deerfield or Exeter take any seats on them in the first 500. Deerfield and Exeter made a strong push overstroking SPS which settled into a strong rhythm and pace with solid swing. The crews maintained the margins down the course with SPS pushing back on Exeter in the last 500 where all crews crossed the line with fast times after a hard fought race.
3rd eights: The boats started on the line and sprang off the start with Deerfield just a few seats up on St. Paul’s which was a few seats up on Exeter. The crews drove through the first 500 with SPS widening the margin on Exeter while keeping contact with Deerfield. The Exeter crew had veered into the other lane and was pushing the other crews right. Exeter was called back into their racing lane and had to veer wide around a buoy. This added time and distance for them and they moved back into their lane behind the other crews which continued to battle down the course. St. Paul’s made a strong move in the third 500 to take seats back on Deerfield as the crews headed to the line with Deerfield 2 seconds up on St. Paul’s which finished ahead of Exeter. A great competitive race.
4th eights: A clean start by all crews as they settled into the first 250 meters of the race with SPS slightly up on Deerfield and Exeter which were both overstroking SPS. As the boats approached the 500 meter mark, SPS had opened up a length of open water lead over Deerfield , who had pulled a a length up on Exeter. Through the middle 500 meters, SPS continued to open their lead and drove aggressively into the last 500 and towards the line. A very strong race by the SPS 4th boat that finished up on Deerfield and Exeter.
5th eights: All crews started on the line and had a solid start with Deerfield pushing a few seats up on SPS. However, at the 250m mark, SPS caught a boat stopping crab that caused them to move out of their lane. The crew re-pointed the boat and restarted the race. Deerfield had opened up a significant lead and the SPS boat made a strong effort to settle into a solid rhythm to push down the course, though they were not able to recover the distance on Deerfield which crossed the line ahead of the SPS crew.
In the Davis Cup competition between Exeter and St. Paul’s (awarded to the winner of the majority of boys and girls races and, in the event of a tie, to the winner of the first boat races) was won by St. Paul’s School.
Thanks to Deerfield and Exeter for making the trip to Concord for a great day of racing!
May 27, 2023 vs Deerfield Academy / Kent School / Phillips Exeter Academy / Phillips Academy Andover — FIRST PLACE
Girls Crew Repeats as E. Arthur Gilcreast Team Trophy Winners and Secure Their New England Championship
35 St. Paul’s School
34 Deerfield Academy
29 Kent School
23 Phillips Exeter Academy
18 Phillips Academy Andover
All three girls boats raced well in the morning heats to advance to the afternoon grand finals.
1st 8: In the morning heat, SPS had a strong start to push ahead all the boats in the field with Kent one length off of SPS at the 1000m mark. Kent was over-stroking the SPS boat by at least 3 beats and the SPS crew remained confident and strong at a solid rhythm. In the last 500, Kent pushed into SPS with a sprint while the SPS crew increased the press to hold off Kent and cross the line first in the morning heat. Rowing comfortably and focusing on length and swing, the SPS boat had crossed the line relaxed and poised for the afternoon grand final. In that race, SPS came to the line against first-seed Deerfield and an Exeter crew that was hungry to redeem their loss to SPS from the week before. All boats had a very strong start, with SPS and Deerfield and Exeter all holding even through the first 250 when SPS and Deerfield pushed up a couple seats on Exeter. As the boats moved into the second 500, Deerfield increased their lead to ó length while SPS and Exeter pulled away from the rest of the field with Andover still charging and Kent and Boston Latin falling behind. As the boats came into the final 500, Exeter and SPS were charging up against Deerfield as all of the boats brought the rating up for a sprint in the last 200 meters. While Exeter attempted a charge, SPS countered and held off the Exeter crew to cross the line 2.8 seconds behind Deerfield, improving their 5 second loss to them last week, while staying ahead of Exeter by 1.6 seconds. The SPS 1st girls won silver medals in a phenomenal race and the best racing piece of the entire season.
2nd 8: In the qualifying heat, the SPS crew rowed within striking distance of Exeter to secure second place and advance to the afternoon grand final. In that event, the SPS second boat came to the line knowing that Exeter and Deerfield would be formidable (both had beaten SPS the week before), and that the Kent boat was showing some strong speed from the morning racing. As the boats pushed off the start in the grand final race, Deerfield, Exeter and SPS all were even through the first 500 with Kent pushing to maintain contact. Glastonbury and Andover remained about one length behind the lead boats. As they came into the second 500, Kent began to make a strong push while Deerfield dropped behind Exeter and SPS who were both pushing to hold off Kent’s charge. As the boats crossed the 1000m, Kent made a monster move to surge ahead of Exeter and SPS who were trading seats as the boats came into the last 250m. Kent pushed ahead and SPS and Exeter both took it up for a sprint to the line which was an incredible show of rhythm and power. It came down to a photo finish that showed Exeter 1 one-hundredth of a second ahead of SPS = the equivalent of almost . of an inch. This was the most exciting race of the day and both crews left everything on the water. The SPS G2 rowed the most incredible race of their season, making up for the significant margins on Deerfield and Exeter from the week before. SPS finished with bronze and above their seed, adding critical points to the team trophy tally. An amazing job by this crew!
3rd 8: The SPS third boat rowed well in their morning heat to secure prime position for the grand final. In that race, the top three crews right off the start were Deerfield and St. Paul’s with Hanover and Bedford also holding their own against the other crews. SPS pushed ahead in the first 500 while Deerfield and Hanover were trading seats with Bedford, Kent, and Glastonbury not far behind. St. Paul’s rowed well with strong rhythm, laying down a powerful stroke and strong base rate to widen their lead over the other crews. In the second 500, SPS continued to increase their lead on the other crews while Deerfield and Hanover continued to battle with the remaining boats dropping back off the pace. As they moved into the third 500, SPS continued to widen their margin on the other boats, rowing with poise and confidence. By the 250 meter mark, SPS pushed ahead increasing their margin to more than three lengths on Deerfield and marched with determination to cross the line a full 12 seconds ahead to win the coveted gold medal. A truly awesome performance by a third boat which has continued to pick up speed all season.
Final Results: In addition to winning the Ernestine Bayer Award for the third girls’ eight, SPS also edged out Deerfield by 1 point to win the E. Arthur Gilcreast Team Trophy and secure the New England Championship once again for St. Paul’s School. This is the third consecutive team trophy win and the fourth in the last five NEIRA regatttas. A wonderful performance by the SPS crew where every boat did their part in a full team effort to secure the team trophy!

April 1, 2023 vs St. Mark's School, Win 15-4
SPS Boys Lax Opens Up Season With Win Over St. Mark’s
The St. Paul’s School boys varsity lacrosse team started the 2023 season with a convincing 15 to 4 win over St.Mark’s School down in Marlborough MA. The team had strong performances from one end of the field to the other. Heath Mann and AJ True both played exceptional games with Heath allowing only 1 goal and recording 7 saves. AJ True continued the excellent play between the pipes in the second half, allowing only 3 goals and making 8 saves.
The Pelican defense remained strong with newcomers Jay Falk and Mike Seward stepping into starting defensive roles today and carrying the day. Our face-off men, Bryan Folsom and Gus Belsher, were near flawless winning almost every face off on the day and giving our offense the edge with possession time after time. The Big Red jumped out to an early lead in the first period going up 6-0 after the first 12 minutes and the team never looked back. Continued pressure by the pelicans pushed the game to 11-1 at half time and to a final score of 15-4 after four quarters of play.
Our offense was led by our three starting attackman, Ryan Doherty, Conley Bohan and Matias Williams who each recorded 4 goals on the day. New talent Quinton Delorey was impressive at two-way middie, recording one goal and lots of offensive and defensive field time. Quinn Caryl-Klika navigated his switch to midfield by playing solid team offense and recording one goal of his own.
Angus Clark in his first game appearance in a Pelican uniform also tallied one goal to push the Big Red total to 15. The team looks to a busy week ahead with three games, the first being Groton School Zebras on Wednesday.
April 5, 2023 vs Groton, Loss 6-11
SPS Falls to Groton
The St. Paul’s School boys lacrosse team dropped their second game of the season to the hard charging squad of the Groton Zebras. The Big Red struggled throughout the afternoon down at the home field of Groton School and were never able to quite find their rhythm. The first half was all Zebras as the Big Red went down 6-0 after the first two quarters of play. The team slowly crawled back into the game with Ryan Doherty scoring a couple of goals early in the second half. SPS continued to work diligently as Charlie Hepp added another goal and Quinn Caryl-Klicka made a strong fourth quarter run scoring a hat trick in the final frame. The relentless defense and aggressive play of Groton was too much for the Big Red as Groton added five more of their own throughout the second half and the game ended with a score of 11-6. The Big Red has no time to rest as they prepare to travel to Berwick Academy on Thursday.

April 8, 2023 vs Holderness School, Loss 5-15
Big Red Falls to Holderness
The boys varsity lacrosse team dropped to 2-2 on the season with a home opener loss to the Holderness School. Despite some strong work at the face off x by Bryan Folsom and solid goal tending from Heath Mann and AJ True, the SPS Pelicans struggled to find the back of the net against a talented team of Holderness mules. Holderness got out to a 2-0 lead after the first twelve minutes and extended that to 7-2 at half time. The Big Red came back with a strong third period, matching the Bulls of Holderness 3-3 in the third, and ending the period at 10-5. April 19, 2023 vs Dexter School, Win 8-7
Big Red Huge OT Win Over Dexter
An incredible come from behind win for the boys varsity lacrosse team as they defeated Dexter Southfield in overtime on a cool blustery day at the Bogle-Lechner turf field. The Big Red got off to a slow start in the first half with some less than stellar shooting and a few miscues on defense, and the Pelicans found themselves down 6-2 at halftime. First half goals for the Big Red were scored by Conley Bohan and Matias Williams. The second half saw a dramatic turn-around from one end of the field to the other. Bryan Folsom started to dominate the face-off X and AJ True was lights out in goal, making 9 second half saves including some key stops in the final few minutes. The Pelican defense stepped it up a notch with fantastic play from Mike Seward, Jay Falk and Carson Daniell holding Dexter to just one second half goal. The offense began to click as well, as Quinton Delorey, Matias Williams and Ryan Doherty each added a goal in the second half. Conley Bohan (hat trick on the day) scored twice in the final quarter to push the game to overtime. In the opening sequence of overtime, Conley Bohan found Quinn Caryl-Klika at the top of the box for a step down righty blast and a sudden death victory! For the Big Red, the wheels fell off the bus some in the second half as a surging Pingree team converted on multiple scoring opportunities and a Big Red team who had committed no penalties in the last two games, found themselves in the penalty box far too often. Pingree was able to pour in 12 goals in the final two frames to win 9-19.

May 13, 2023 vs New Hampton School, Win 12-11
Great Comeback Leads to 2OT Victory for the Big Red
Saturday afternoon, on the Bogle-Lechner turf field, the boys varsity lacrosse team had a thrilling come-from-behind double overtime victory over last year’s Lakes Region champion the New Hampton School Huskies by a score of 12-11. The first quarter saw back and forth action on both sides of the field as the teams traded goals, with the Big Red up 3-2 after one quarter of play. New Hampton would get on a role in the second quarter scoring seven goals to the Pelican’s two and the Huskies went into the half-time break with a 9-5 lead. Some half-time adjustments by the Big Red defense and a renewed sense of purpose by the offense set up an exciting final two quarters. The Big Red would hold the Huskies to only two goals in the final two periods as the Pelican offense began to find some seams in the New Hampton defense. Two third period goals and an incredible four goal fourth period set the stage for an overtime showdown with a score of 11-11 after regulation play. The first overtime period saw lots of opportunities for both teams but no scoring. In the second overtime, a penalty on the Huskies gave the Big Red a man advantage and then, with only a few seconds left on the man-up clock, Ryan Doherty found Matias Williams on the crease and Matias adeptly found a top corner to win the game 12-11. Scoring in today’s game: Angus Clark (3G), Rocco Bryant (3G, 1A), Ryan Doherty (3G,3A), Matias Williams (2G), Quinn Caryl-Klika (1G,1A), Dylan Biggs (2A), and Charlie Hepp (1A). Boys Lax Drops Lakes Region Semi 15-14 in OT
The boys varsity lacrosse team lost their final game of the season 15-14, in a thrilling overtime match against the Bobcats of Brewster Academy in the semi-final game of the Lakes Region championship. After the regular season was complete, the Big Red held the number three spot in the overall Lakes Region standings and therefore traveled north to take on the number two seeded team, Brewster Academy, on their home turf Wednesday afternoon.
The Big Red were slow to get off the bus and Brewster quickly jumped out to an early and significant lead in the first quarter. The underdog SPS squad never gave up and battled back and were within three goals by halftime with a score of 9-6. A stronger performance by the Big Red in the second half brought the game back to even with each team trading goals in the fourth, with SPS scoring in the final minute to take the lead 14-13 with very little time left on the clock. Brewster would eventually get the ball off a face-off scrum and with less than 11 seconds left on the game clock, found the back of the net to push the match into overtime.
Overtime saw both teams with excellent chances to win but with short time left in the first overtime, Brewster was able to score one more goal, to win the game and move on to the championship game. Scoring in today’s game were Ryan Doherty (5G,4A), Matias Williams (4G), Quinton Delorey (3G,1A), Charlie Hepp (1G, 1A), and Rocco Bryant (1G). A special farewell to our sixth formers who all played an incredible season and should be very proud of their careers here in SPS athletics.

St. Paul’s | 5-4 | New Hampton |
Summary: The Pelicans squad was fortunate to be able to play their first match of the season despite the weather forecast. The veterans trio of JB, James, and Scott lead us off in singles on the 3 indoor courts. Our Sixth Form captains, James and Scott showed maturity and steady play throughout the several lead changes in their hard fought matches. JB encountered one of the league’s strongest players and could not work into a rhythm today. Diego, Grego, and William took on the bottom half of New Hampton’s talented lineup, continuing the display of dramatic lead changes and quality shotmaking. William’s intelligent strategy of chip and charge lead to many approach-volley-overhead sequences to his benefit. With the match tied 3-3 going into doubles, the stakes were high. Declan played like a seven footer and controlled the net with the help of Hunter’s tactful groundstrokes and steady volleys. JB and James went back and forth against New Hampton’s top players, culminating in a terrific tiebreaker. Thanks to a “big” overhead from James and a clutch serve from JB our guys clinched the team match with the 5th point. Following the #1 doubles win, Enoch and Peter ended their first varsity match with a lot less riding on the result. This win by the slimmest of margins is a positive start for the 2023 team! Next up we head to Worcester on Saturday, April 8.

Summary: The Big Red put out their top four players to start singles, on a sunny day in Worcester. The first sets went fast for JB, James, Scott, and William but the second sets caught the attention of the crowd, keeping us all entertained! James made his second set look easy, which certainly was not that easy. William’s determination and tactful mix of spin and power gave our team another much needed point. JB’s opponent played a tough second set, using slice groundstrokes combined with big forehands to extend the set to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, JB’s patience, great focus, and strong groundstrokes led to a well earned win. Scott also played an incredibly gritty player, forcing Scott to play every point hard. The third set tiebreaker was close but a few big points did not go our way. In the next round of singles matches, Diego was efficient, which was a relief for us. Grego’s match turned exciting in the second set, with Grego relying on his heavy topspin forehands to pull out the win. In doubles Scott and William played two very tough doubles players. Despite William’s strong volleys and Scott’s big groundstrokes, Worcester earned a point at #1 doubles. Hunter and Enoch paired together for the first time in their SPS career and made quick work of the #2 team. Peter and Pierce were the final match and we all watched Peter’s big serves and forehands compliment Pierce’s steady backhands and volleys. Next up we head to Exeter on Wednesday, April 12! Go Big Red!

Summary: Exeter delivered St. Paul’s its first loss of the season. We led off with doubles, putting in 6 of our best players against 6 of Exeter’s best. JB served well and James did what he could on the deuce side but this top team from Exeter was fast and powerful. At two, Hunter was moving well at the net and Scott exchanged some solid crosscourt groundstrokes but again Exeter was too much. William and Diego were the last to finish and almost brought the score to 7-6, with some great volleys by Diego and approach shots from William. After doubles, our six guys battled to get a point on the board but Exeter was better than us today in all areas. We can call it a useful learning experience about how to consistently play this game at a very high level. We will look forward to facing Exeter again this season.

New to our lineup for today, Jason and David, provided the team with two deciding match wins and contributed to the St. Paul’s win in a big way! Pierce and Lino stepped it up in doubles with energetic play and movement. Jason and David almost brought the crowd to their feet as the last match of the day to finish. Up next, Proctor on Friday with more great tennis from this group!

St. Paul’s | 8-1 | Proctor Academy |
Summary: With a trimmed lineup due to Mid-Spring Weekend travel plans for some, SPS faced Proctor on a beautiful Friday evening at the St. Paul’s outdoor courts. The Big Red led off sweeping all four doubles matches. Hunter and JB stepped up in their first outing together against a heavy hitting number one doubles team. Peter and Enoch made some high quality crosscourt ground strokes to help them make quick work of their opponents at two. Declan and Jason’s doubles debut was also dominant with Declan’s imposing presence at the net and Jason’s massive forehands. JB pulled out of the singles due to arm soreness, offering Hunter an opportunity to prove himself at the number one spot. In a bit of a David and Goliath scenario, with Hunter being David, we all believed he could prevail. After dropping the first set, Hunter gained an early lead in the second set, showing an impressive display of grit. He went on to confidently finish off this highly ranked Lakes Region number one player in the tiebreaker! Meanwhile, Enoch, Peter, and Declan were making solid adjustments to move their matches along towards victories. Junyi made his varsity debut count with some smooth and steady forehands at number six. We all watched Jason almost come up with a second set victory to a tenacious and solid number five player. The team is off for a few days, enjoying time with friends and family!

St. Paul’s | 7-2 | Cardigan Mountain |
Summary: On another rainy spring day we played at Cardigan’s indoor facility, which proved to be a fast surface. Hunter looked comfortable in the number one spot again, dismantling an opponent with big groundstrokes, but not as much variety as Hunter. Enoch’s attacking shots looked great, and his opponent forced Enoch to come up with some clutch serves at the end. Diego’s shots were magnified by the fast playing surface as he worked through a few kinks along the road to a victory. Pierce almost came back to tie up the set at 7-7 but his opponent’s big, topspin forehand and steady play were a bit too much. Declan had a handful of aces during his singles match, serving as well as anyone on his way to a quick victory. Lino worked hard to close out his set, chasing down dropshots, and holding serve at love in the end. In doubles, Hunter and Enoch needed to stick their volleys and make solid groundstrokes throughout to earn their win. Declan and Diego paired well together with a much more powerful game than their opponents could handle. Lino and Pierce needed a few more points at the end to go their way but dropped the set to a quick number three team. Two more matches this week, Holderness on Friday and KUA Saturday. Go Big Red!

Summary: Coming off a week full of matches and schoolwork our Varsity squad rose to the challenge on a beautiful Saturday in the hills of Northwest New Hampshire at KUA. Hunter and Scott teamed up in a close one that eventually went our way thanks to Scott’s aggressive net play and Hunter’s intelligent shot combinations. Peter and Enoch proved to be a strong pair and demonstrated the ability to make adjustments and put more balls in play to close out their set. William and Declan cruised to a victory using Declan slam dunks onto the roof of the adjacent building and William’s tactful shot selection. In singles we went about our mission to close out all six matches in a clean, efficient manner. The game of tennis is never easy and the scores deceive that notion. It was a good day, with proud parents, coaches, and others watching our respectful, sportsmanlike, athletic team work hard and earn the clean sweep. Next up we head to Chestnut Hill, MA to take on Beaver Country Day School on Wednesday, May 10.

St. Paul’s | 9-0 | Beaver Country Day |
Summary: Our healthy 9, traveled to Brookline, MA to take on the Beaver Country Day squad in a non-conference match. In doubles, JB and Scott needed to turn up their games after starting the set down 1-5, and looked sharp doing so to get the win. Hunter and William had great chemistry in their win. Enoch and Peter also took a few games to warm up and then showed no mercy. The highlight for singles was having everyone watching our Sixth Form Captain, Scott Jiao, play a tough second set and move things to a tiebreaker. In his last interscholastic match for St. Paul’s, Scott played gutsy, down 5-8 to win the next 5 points and the victory! Thanks for ALL of the memories Scott! Next up, the Lakes Region Tournament this Saturday! Go Pelicans!
May 13, 2023 vs Lakes Region Tournament — First Place
SPS Boys Tennis Wins Lakes Region Tournament
We traveled to New Hampton School on Saturday with six guys to participate in the Lakes Region League Tournament. There were four separate mini tournaments, one for each of the following: #1 singles, #2 singles, #1 doubles, and #2 doubles. Each draw consisted of 8-10 players from other Lakes Region Schools.
JB Estes ’25 was set to play in the #1 singles tournament but had a last minute medical problem and needed to default his match. He is feeling better now and seems to have a handle on the probable cause.
Scott Jiao ’23 represented us in the #2 singles tournament. On his way to becoming Champion, he defeated Holderness, 8-2, Cardigan, 8-4, and Brewster, 8-3, with consistent play mixed with impressive offensive shots. This was Scott’s final match wearing the SPS red and we are all proud of his accomplishments during the last four years!
Hunter Morton ’26 and William Mao ’23 proved to be the strongest #1 doubles team, also defeating Brewster in the finals, 8-3. Their road to the finals brought them against Tilton, then KUA, both going to St. Paul’s with a score of 8-2. Congratulations to Hunter and William for competing at such a high level in all three rounds!
Enoch Huang ’25 and Peter Ding ’26, our #2 doubles team gained valuable tournament experience on their way to becoming Champions. Their first round match against a tenacious Cardigan team went to a tiebreaker. Peter and Enoch showed incredible determination, overcoming a tense back and forth set. In the semis and finals, against New Hampton and Brewster respectively, they looked confident and powerful while earning their victories.
Congratulations to our team for representing St. Paul’s School so well! Next week we close out the regular season and travel to Northfield Mount Herman and Brewster.
May 17, 2023 vs Northfield Mount Hermon, Win 4-3
SPS Boys Varsity Tennis Inches Past NMH
We had nine guys travel to play in the windy hills of Northfield today against a Class “A” NEPSAC school. Using the NEPSAC format, with regular scoring we had an exciting battle filled with ad and deuce points as well as a couple super tiebreakers. In doubles Hunter and William played NMH’s top duo closer than the score indicates. Peter and Enoch again looked fantastic with big down the line groundstrokes and quick hands at the net. Declan pulled off a jaw dropping “tweener” covering a lob but he and Pierce came up a bit short, and NMH had a 1-0 lead going into singles. Hunter, Peter, and Diego left little to chance in their decisive and satisfying wins. Lino did the same in his exhibition. We were left with JB and Enoch going toe-to-toe with their opponents. JB played a terrific second set and almost came up with the super tiebreaker. With the match tied at 3-3, Enoch was the last man standing. After dropping the second set he regrouped and hit some blistering groundstrokes and stayed tough mentally on his way to being the hero for us today! Our final team match is Friday versus Brewster!
May 19, 2023 vs Brewster Academy, Loss 3-6
SPS Drops Match to Brewster
&We played our last team match of the season against a Lakes Region rival and powerhouse at their scenic courts in Wolfeboro, NH on Friday evening. It was evident from the start of the doubles matches, Brewster was ready to challenge our position at the top of the Lakes Region League. Our #1 and #2 doubles teams couldn’t find enough answers to combat the ultra aggressive net play from Brewster. At #3 Declan and Hunter did a solid job of earning one point for our team before heading into singles. With the doubles setting the tone, our singles lineup fought hard for a couple hours into the twilight. Brewster’s crepusclar team earned their victory, topping us in all 4 tiebreakers in the final 15 minutes. While it didn’t go our way this time our boys were in the trenches for almost three hours of hard fought tennis. It was an evening we won’t soon forget and a well played match by Brewster. Next up…preparations for next year!!
May 27, 2023 New England Tournament
Boys Tennis Competes at New Englands
On Saturday, May 27, JB Estes, ‘25, Hunter Morton, ‘26, Peter Ding, ‘26, and Enoch Huang, ‘25 competed in the New England Prep School Invitational Tennis Tournament (NEPSITT) at Choate Rosemary Hall. This tournament showcases top players from the NEPSAC schools.
JB, playing in the “A” Singles Championship Draw put up a solid showing throughout the day. JB won his opening match efficiently, then fell to a strong Loomis player in the Quarterfinals. In the Consolation Draw JB defeated a tough player from Choate then lost a very close match to Andover’s steady player in the Semifinals.
Hunter, playing in the “B” Singles Draw lost his long, tough, first round match in a tiebreaker, then went on to win the Consolation Draw.
Peter and Enoch teamed up together in the Doubles Championship Draw and had a quick win in the first round match against a Watkins pair. In the Quarterfinals it was SPS vs Wheeler and the match took a variety of turns with the result going to Wheeler 9-7. We faced another Wheeler team in the Quarterfinals of the Consolation draw, and won that challenging match. Facing a tough team from Salisbury in the Consolation Semifinals, Peter and Enoch showed everyone some of their best doubles of the season but fell 8-4 to the Salisbury boys.
Congratulations to JB, Hunter, Peter, and Enoch on finishing the season with a fun, competitive, and exciting day of tennis! Sore legs, reflective thoughts, and time together improved our appetites…for the future of SPS tennis! Go Big Red!
