Rowers Violet '20 and Alison '20 win gold with USRowing
Violet Barletta '20 and Alison Liu '20 rowed to gold with the girls varsity eight at the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships in May; then the eight captured the Peabody Cup at the Henley Women’s Regatta in June. Now, Barletta and Liu are celebrating success with the U.S. Junior National Team.
Liu competed with the U.S. coxed four and eight at the CanAmMex Regatta, held in Sarasota, Florida, July 13 and 14, and secured gold in both divisions. That same weekend, Barletta raced in the coxed four, the intermediate eight, and the elite eight at the USRowing National Championships in Bethel, Ohio. Her crews claimed gold in each category. Barletta rows next with the American eight at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo, Japan, August 7-11.
The Reverend Michael Spencer, coach of the SPS girls crew, says he's proud of Barletta and Liu, the co-captains for the 2020 season, and other Big Red rowers putting in extra time on the water this summer. “We have several rowers participating in rowing programs as they prepare for the 2020 season,” remarks Spencer. “Alison and Violet are competing at the highest level, representing the USA in international competition. Their achievements, both on and off the water, reflects the reason why they were selected to lead the team as this year’s captains. Their leadership and that of our other Sixth Formers will be instrumental in building a strong foundation for this year's crew.”
