Letter from Board President Archibald Cox, Jr. '58

Concerning the Rector's resignation
To the St. Paul’s School Community,
With mixed feelings, I join Mike Hirschfeld today in announcing his departure from the School after the 2018-19 academic year. St. Paul’s School, and I personally, will miss his wise and courageous leadership.
Mike has been a valued member of our community since his arrival at Millville as a young student. He joined the faculty in 1994 and then served in a number of administrative capacities until his appointment as Rector seven years ago, at which time he committed to an eight-year term. As teacher, adviser, coach, colleague, manager, and head of school, he has demonstrated constant and conscientious loyalty to his alma mater.
This is not the time to enumerate all of Mike’s contributions to the School – we will try to thank him appropriately next year – but as board president, I simply want to express the trustees’ gratitude for his exceptional leadership. During his years as Rector, Mike has overseen major advancements in meeting the mission of the School, among them the expansion and integration of campus facilities, a transformation in academic professionalism, and very significant enhancement of the community culture, while at the same time having to deal with unprecedented challenges on numerous fronts.
Now, as the end of Mike’s committed term approaches, his energy, wisdom, and devotion to St. Paul’s School has been manifestly clear throughout. In meeting our challenges, Mike has demonstrated exceptional insight and courage. For those qualities, I am especially grateful.
In the weeks ahead, the trustees will begin planning for the always contemplated transition and put in place a rigorous process to find the person who will best lead St. Paul’s for the next decade as its Fourteenth Rector and as we further strengthen the School and its community. In every stage of these deliberations, we will seek participation from all members of the SPS family.
I am grateful to Mike for giving us the time to proceed with our most considered diligence in this search. And, on behalf of all the trustees, thank you, Mike, for all you have done and for your continued devotion to St. Paul’s School.
Sincerely,
Archibald Cox, Jr. ’58
President of the Board of Trustees
