Boys and girls Alpine teams win Lakes Region Championships
The St. Paul’s School Alpine team ended their season on a high note, with two big wins at the Lakes Region Championships on Wednesday, February 20. It was a beautiful day for skiing with perfect snow conditions at the giant slalom (GS) races hosted by Proctor Academy. Not only did both the boys and girls win their races, but their combined slalom and GS scores also put them on top for the league. Both teams ended the season as Lakes Region Alpine Champions for the second year in a row.
Reed Cole ’20 led the way for the girls, winning the field, with Captain Mari Nakamura ’19 capping off her SPS Alpine career strong with a second place finish. Morgan Cheney ’20 was the Big Red’s third highest point scorer, finishing in fifth. All SPS skiers completed the afternoon in the top two-thirds of the competition: Jin Chey ’21 finished just behind Cheney in sixth, Phoebe Schmaltz ’22 in 11th, Agatha La Voie ’20 in 22nd, and Ellie La Voie ’21 in 27th.
The SPS boys team had a banner day – finishing all eight of their racers in the top 15. Riki Nakamura ’22 took top honors, winning the day. He was followed in close succession by Daniel Cho ’21 in third, Mason Cheney ’21 in fourth, Tobias Benetton ’21 in fifth, and Captain Charlie Kauffman ’19, who finished his SPS career strong in sixth place. Dan Hillery ’20 skied a fast second run, helping him move from 12th place into ninth, and Rex Thors ’19 ended his SPS career on a high note, placing 11th.
