Season Outlook 2019
The 2019-20 SPS Varsity Field Hockey season is in full swing. After two competitive weeks of tryouts and a scrimmage against KUA, the newly finalized Pelican roster challenged Groton in the season opener this Saturday, 9/14, beating the Zebras 5-0. Over the course of tryouts, Head Coach Crutchfield and Assistant Coach Kaulbach reviewed the play of nearly forty girls before determining a varsity squad of twenty-one. The coaching team recognizes and commends the work ethic and talent of every girl who tried out, and attribute the high number of athletes vying for varsity slots to a strong JV team culture last season, excellent skill building and encouragement from Coach Foster and Coach Hambleton, and several openings on the varsity starting lineup. This bodes well for the JV season, as well as for the vitality at all levels of the SPS Field Hockey program.
After graduating eight from the starting lineup in June and welcoming back to the team underclassmen Sky Demers, Emmy Ekstrand, Megan Mallgrave, Martha Covo, Amanda Sudnik, Carlee Smith, and Maya Maloney, St. Paul’s looks to bring many young players into competition this year. Varsity co-captains and seniors Andrea Delguidice, Eliza Farriss, and Ellie Neel bring polished skill and intensity to their leadership of an athletic and coachable team. With sailers, rowers, tennis, lacrosse, and ice hockey players among the ranks, SPS looks to mold the agility and dynamic potential of its capable sportswomen to defend the net and win games on grit, teamwork, and execution of plays. Newcomers to the team, Cali Bishop, Gracie DeSimone, Agatha La Voie, Jenna Malone, Zoe Demers, Morgan Cheney, Tessa Demain, Virginia Lawrence, Alison Liu, and Eden Wright bring to the turf each afternoon a competitive edge, passion, and creativity. Newcomer, senior Cheney will play goalkeeper for St. Paul’s this season, and former goalie Mallgrave ‘21 will step out of net for a defensive field position.
Coach Crutchfield emphasizes the importance of teamwork and positivity in her coaching every day. Already the team is beginning to click and build on successes in practice. Good things are in store for this dedicated group of SPS athletes, already off to a 1-0 start!
